Mildura is an aboriginal word that translates to mean 'Red Earth'. Alfred Deakin, statesman and advocate for irrigation persuaded the Chaffey Brothers, Canadian born irrigation experts to visit region. They recognised its potential and selected Mildura as the first site for development. Today Mildura city is a thriving regional city with a population over 25,000 and the Sunraysia district has over 50,000 in population. Mildura is one of Australia's fastest growing regional areas, providing many with a rewarding lifestyle along the Murray River. Mildura is fast becoming recognised as a region for quality food and wine. The climate is ideal for growing grapes and many wineries provide cellar door sales. There is also a large number of restaurants in the area including the diverse offerings of feast street where people can enjoy many local delicacies including murray cod, yabbies and fresh vegetable and fruit produce.
